Getting To Know The Cowfish – Long Horn
The Cowfish – Long Horn (Lactoria cornuta) is one of the most unusual and captivating marine species you can keep in a home aquarium. With its cube-like body, vibrant yellow colouring, and the distinctive horn-like projections from its head and tail, it’s a true conversation starter. Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Long Horn Cowfish is slow-moving, inquisitive, and full of personality. Many aquarists describe them as interactive and even pet-like. However, despite their appeal, they come with some unique care requirements that make them better suited for experienced marine hobbyists.

Tank Requirements
Long Horn Cowfish need plenty of space to explore and thrive. A juvenile can be housed in a tank of around 400 litres (100 gallons), but as they grow—sometimes up to 45cm—larger systems of 600+ litres are much more appropriate. These fish are slow swimmers, so the tank should have wide open areas, rounded rockwork, and very few sharp edges.
They’re prone to bumping into objects, so aim for soft aquascaping with lots of open water and low obstructions. Unlike many reef fish, Cowfish don’t dart in and out of rocks. Instead, they meander slowly around the tank, inspecting everything in their path.
Water Quality And Parameters
Cowfish are sensitive to changes in water quality, and their long-term health relies heavily on clean, stable conditions. They also release toxins (ostracitoxin) when severely stressed or dying, which can harm or kill other tank mates—this makes high-quality life support systems and careful handling essential.
Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
pH: 8.1 to 8.4
Salinity: 1.023 to 1.025
Flow Rate: Low to moderate
A protein skimmer and chemical filtration such as activated carbon are recommended to keep the water as clean and stable as possible.
Diet And Feeding
The Long Horn Cowfish is an omnivore and will eat a wide variety of foods once settled into its environment. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates, algae, sponges, and even small crustaceans. In captivity, a varied and enriched diet is key to keeping them healthy.
Frozen mysis shrimp and brine shrimp
Chopped clams, squid, and prawns
High-quality marine omnivore pellets
Spirulina-based algae wafers
Marine gel foods
Feeding should be done two to three times per day in smaller portions, and you’ll often find Cowfish watching you expectantly at the front of the tank when it’s feeding time.
Compatibility And Behaviour
Long Horn Cowfish are peaceful but can be easily bullied due to their slow movement and lack of speed. Ideal tank mates include gentle species such as gobies, blennies, clownfish, and smaller tangs. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving fish that may outcompete them for food or harass them, such as triggers or large wrasses.
It’s important to note that if severely stressed or injured, Cowfish may release a toxin that can affect other fish. Keeping them in a stress-free environment with calm tank mates, plenty of space, and stable water conditions helps avoid this.
Common Health Issues
Because of their sensitivity, Cowfish are susceptible to typical marine illnesses like marine ich or bacterial infections, especially if water quality drops. Quarantine all new arrivals before introducing them to your display tank and monitor your Cowfish closely for signs of stress, such as rapid breathing, loss of colour, or erratic swimming.
Their horns can also get damaged, but these usually heal over time in a healthy environment.
Final Thoughts
The Long Horn Cowfish is a showstopping addition to any large, peaceful marine aquarium. Their quirky looks, gentle temperament, and engaging behaviour make them truly one of a kind. While they do require more attention than your average reef fish, the reward is a fascinating and personable marine companion that brings a unique charm to your underwater world. With the right setup, consistent care, and a thoughtful approach to tank mates, the Long Horn Cowfish can thrive and become a favourite in your aquatic family.
