Getting to Know the False Gramma
The False Gramma (also known as Pseudochromis paccagnellae, or the Royal Dottyback) is a striking and popular choice for marine hobbyists, especially those with smaller reef tanks. Often mistaken for the Royal Gramma due to its similar purple and yellow colouration, the False Gramma has a bold personality that can sometimes take aquarists by surprise.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this small but feisty fish grows to around 6–8 cm in length and is known for its hardy nature and ease of care. While its size and adaptability make it well-suited to nano and mid-sized reef tanks, its territorial behaviour means tank mates should be chosen with care.

Tank Setup and Environment
The False Gramma doesn’t need a massive aquarium to thrive. A tank size of around 100 litres is usually sufficient for a single specimen, provided there’s plenty of rockwork for them to hide and establish territory. These fish are cave dwellers by nature and appreciate nooks, crevices, and shaded areas where they can dart in and out as they patrol their space.
They do best in a mature, stable system with good water quality and minimal fluctuations. Lighting should be moderate, and tankmates should be chosen wisely to avoid unnecessary stress or confrontation.
If you’re planning a community tank, it’s a good idea to introduce the False Gramma after other peaceful fish have established themselves. This can help reduce territorial aggression.
Feeding and Nutrition
Feeding the False Gramma is straightforward, as they’re not fussy eaters. In the wild, they feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton, and they’ll accept a wide range of foods in captivity.
A good feeding routine includes:
High-quality marine pellets or flakes
Frozen mysis or brine shrimp
Finely chopped seafood (like prawn or clam)
Occasional live food for enrichment
Feed once or twice daily in small amounts. Despite their size, these fish can be quite greedy, so avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Behaviour and Compatibility
While undeniably attractive, the False Gramma can be surprisingly territorial for its size. They tend to stake out a section of the tank and defend it vigorously, especially against other dottybacks or fish of a similar size and shape.
They’re best kept singly unless you have a very large tank with plenty of rockwork to break lines of sight. Suitable tankmates include:
Clownfish
Wrasses
Tangs (in larger tanks)
Gobies
Blennies
Avoid housing them with other pseudochromis species or timid fish that may be bullied. In most setups, the False Gramma will settle down after the initial introduction phase and show more confident but non-aggressive behaviour.
Water Conditions and Flow
This species is fairly tolerant and robust, making it ideal for beginner to intermediate hobbyists. Still, stable water parameters are key.
Aim for:
Temperature between 24–27°C
pH around 8.1–8.4
Salinity of 1.023–1.025
Moderate flow is best—enough to keep water oxygenated and food particles moving, but not too strong to overwhelm them in small spaces. They prefer quieter areas within the rockwork where they can retreat if needed.
Health and Longevity
False Grammas are generally healthy, resilient fish. When properly cared for, they can live up to 5–7 years in captivity. They’re not especially prone to disease, but like all marine fish, can be affected by poor water conditions or stress from aggressive tank mates.
Always quarantine new additions and maintain a regular cleaning and testing schedule. With good husbandry, this fish will reward you with years of vibrant colour and lively behaviour.
Final Thoughts
The False Gramma is a brilliant option for marine aquarists looking to add colour and character to a smaller reef system. Compact, tough, and visually striking, it brings a splash of personality to any setup. While its territorial streak means it’s not ideal for every tank, with proper planning and care, this little fish will become a confident and entertaining member of your marine community.
Whether you’re starting your first reef or adding a splash of colour to a seasoned system, the False Gramma is a bold little fish that punches well above its weight.
