Getting to Know the Regal Tang – Coral Sea
The Regal Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus), also affectionately known as the Blue Tang or Palette Surgeonfish, is a vibrant and highly recognisable addition to many marine aquariums. The Coral Sea variant of this species is particularly sought after for its deep electric blue colouring and clean black markings, offering a slightly more vivid appearance than other regional variations.
These active, free-swimming tangs are known not only for their stunning looks but also for their lively personality and social behaviour. They can reach up to 25–30 cm in length, making them a striking focal point in medium to large reef or fish-only systems. Regal Tangs are a long-term commitment but, with the right setup, they’re a joy to keep.
Choosing Your Regal Tang – Coral Sea
When choosing a Regal Tang, select a specimen that is alert, actively swimming, and free from visible signs of illness. Look for clear eyes, healthy fins, and bright, saturated colours. Regal Tangs are prone to marine ich, so check carefully for any white spots or laboured breathing.
It’s also wise to choose fish that have been quarantined and are already eating prepared foods. This greatly increases the chances of a smooth transition into your tank.

Tank Setup and Environment
Due to their active swimming habits and eventual adult size, Regal Tangs require a minimum tank size of 400 litres, though larger is always better. They enjoy long stretches of open water for swimming but also need ample live rock for hiding and grazing.
Create a layout with plenty of caves, arches, and overhangs. These structures not only make your aquascape more natural but give the Regal Tang places to retreat when stressed.
A secure lid is essential—they can jump when startled, especially in the early days after introduction.
Feeding and Nutrition
Regal Tangs are primarily herbivores, with a strong preference for marine algae. However, they benefit from a mixed diet that includes some protein sources to keep them healthy and energised.
Offer a variety of:
Nori seaweed sheets (clipped to the glass daily)
Spirulina-based pellets and flakes
Frozen mysis shrimp
Enriched brine shrimp
Chopped prawn or clam (occasional treat)
Feed 2–3 times daily in smaller portions. Providing marine algae regularly will help support their digestive health and reduce aggression.
Behaviour and Compatibility
Regal Tangs are generally peaceful, though they may become territorial with other tangs—especially those of similar shape or colour. They do well in community tanks and tend to get along with most reef-safe species.
Suitable tank mates include:
Clownfish
Wrasses
Gobies
Blennies
Dwarf and medium-sized angelfish
Avoid keeping multiple Regal Tangs in the same system unless the tank is very large and offers plenty of territory.
Water Conditions and Flow
Regal Tangs need pristine water quality to remain healthy and free from disease. They thrive in mature tanks with stable parameters and moderate to strong flow, which helps mimic the reef slopes they naturally inhabit.
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Flow Rate: Moderate to strong
Nitrates: Below 10 ppm
A powerful protein skimmer, good surface agitation, and regular water changes are key to maintaining ideal conditions.
Health and Longevity
Regal Tangs are known for being susceptible to ich and other external parasites, especially when stressed or newly introduced. Quarantine is strongly recommended before adding them to your main display.
With good water quality, a varied diet, and the right environment, they can live for 10–15 years in captivity. They’re very active and social, often following their keepers around the tank once settled.
Final Thoughts
The Regal Tang – Coral Sea is a beautiful and energetic marine fish that brings personality and movement to large aquariums. Though they require a bit of extra care when it comes to diet and water quality, their charm and striking colour make them a highly rewarding addition to an established marine system.
If you’re looking for a centrepiece fish that’s both bold and full of life, the Regal Tang is a regal choice indeed.
